2011 Ninja ZX-10R: 200 hp?

2011 ZX-10RThe sportbike industry has been abuzz with rumors that the all-new, radically-redesigned Kawasaki ZX-10R could make 200-hp at the crank – quite a magical number for a literbike. However, Kawasaki executives have been downplaying the peak horsepower; instead, they have been discussing the new Ninja’s traction control system, which promises to be the most advanced ever offered on a production motorcycle.

As an exec from Kawasaki Tech Services Department has stated:

It’s not how much power a motorcycle has, it’s how much power the rider of that motorcycle can use. That’s what we have worked long and hard to accomplish with the new ZX-10R; that’s what this bike is all about.

In pursuit of that aim, the ZX-10R will offer a highly-advanced ABS system (KIBS for Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System) coupled with S-KTRC, or Sport-Kawasaki Traction Control, which will utilize data gleaned from front-to-rear wheel speed differential, engine RPM, throttle position, and rate of acceleration to make decisions about how to manage traction. Those decisions will be implemented via adjusted ignition timing, and Kawaski says the system should be able to predict slippage even before it occurs, while still allowing power slides and wheelies. If the ZX-10R can truly accomplish this feat, the peak horsepower mark will be an afterthought. After all, it’s not horsepower that wins races; it’s the application of usable power to the tarmac.
